Grade 6 is a turning point in a student’s science journey. They move beyond basic concepts and begin exploring how and why things happen. This course is designed to help students think like scientists and engineers: asking questions, testing ideas, analyzing results, and building solutions.
Throughout the year, students will:
Explore the particle model of matter and understand how particles behave
Investigate forces, motion, and the stability of structures
Study energy, weather, climate, and Earth’s systems
Examine space science, celestial bodies, and technology used beyond Earth
Apply the scientific method and engineering design process

Welcome to Grade 6 Science — let’s make this an unforgettable year of learning and discovery.
Grade 6 Science builds on everything students learned in earlier grades and prepares them for advanced scientific thinking in Grades 7–9. This course is organized into four major units, each aligned with Alberta, Ontario, BC, and NGSS standards:
Students learn how particles behave, how heat affects matter, and how physical and chemical changes occur. They explore particle motion, expansion and contraction, and heat transfer through conduction, convection, and radiation.
Students investigate forces that act on objects and structures. They learn about friction, air resistance, balanced and unbalanced forces, Newton’s Laws, and how engineers design stable structures using compression, tension, torsion, and shear.
Students explore renewable and non‑renewable energy, weather systems, climate change, and interactions between Earth’s spheres. They analyze data, model systems, and understand how human activities impact the environment.
Students study celestial bodies, planetary motion, gravity, galaxies, and the universe. They also explore satellites, probes, coding models, and the International Space Station. The unit ends with a full STEM space exploration project.

This course builds the scientific reasoning and analytical skills needed for Biology 30.
