Course Content

Module 1: Advanced Phonics & Word Study
This module builds upon students' existing knowledge of phonics and decoding to tackle more complex sound patterns. The core focus is to develop fluency and accuracy in reading and spelling words with: Consonant Blends: Students will learn to identify and blend the sounds of three-letter consonant clusters, such as the initial sounds in words like "strong" and "splash." This helps them to decode longer and more complex words. Vowel Teams: The module introduces common two-vowel combinations that make a single long vowel sound. Students will learn the patterns for ea (as in "eat") and ai (as in "rain") to improve their ability to read and spell words with these vowel sounds. R-Controlled Vowels: The curriculum will explore how the letter 'r' changes the sound of the vowel that comes before it. Students will learn to recognize and read the ar sound (as in "car") and the er sound (as in "her"). Throughout the module, students will engage in a variety of activities, including word sorts, phonics games, and reading decodable texts that feature these specific sound patterns. The goal is to move from explicit instruction to independent application, allowing students to confidently read and spell a wider range of words.

Module 2: Fluency & High-Frequency Words
This module focuses on developing reading fluency and mastering high-frequency words. Learners will practice reading with speed, accuracy, and proper expression to improve comprehension. The module also emphasizes the recognition and automatic recall of high-frequency words, which are essential building blocks for early reading success.

Module 3: Vocabulary & Early Morphology
This module boosts your child's word power by focusing on two key areas: building vocabulary (learning the meaning of new words) and exploring early morphology (understanding how words are put together). 🧩 Students will learn strategies to figure out the meaning of unknown words using context clues within a sentence. They will also become "word scientists" by learning to break words down into smaller parts to understand their meaning. Key concepts include: Root Words: The main part of a word (like play in playing). Prefixes: Word parts added to the beginning (like un- in unhappy). Suffixes: Word parts added to the end (like -ful in joyful). Compound Words: Two smaller words that join to create a new one (like sun + flower = sunflower). By mastering these skills, students can unlock the meaning of hundreds of new words on their own, making them more confident readers.

Module 4: Narrative Reading (Fiction)

Setting: Where and when the story takes place. Plot: The main events of the story. The lesson simplifies the plot by breaking it down into a clear Beginning, Middle (often including a problem), and End (where the problem is solved). The main goal is to improve reading comprehension by practicing how to retell the story in their own words, including all these key elements.

Module 5: Informational Reading (Nonfiction)
This module equips students with the essential skills to read and learn from nonfiction texts about the real world. The focus is on moving from reading stories to gathering facts and information. 📖 Students will learn to identify and use key text features as tools for understanding, including the Table of Contents, Headings, Bold Words, Photographs, and the Glossary. The lesson guides learners on how to find the main idea of a text (what it's mostly about) and locate the important key details that support it. By the end of the module, students will be able to confidently navigate a nonfiction book, find specific information, and explain the new facts they have learned.

Module 6: Sentence Skills & Grammar
This module focuses on the building blocks of language: sentences and grammar. We will cover everything you need to know to write clearly and effectively. You will learn about the different parts of a sentence, master punctuation rules, and understand how to use capitalization correctly. We'll also explore different sentence structures, showing you how to build simple, compound, and complex sentences to make your writing more interesting. By the end of this module, you will have the skills to ensure your ideas are always expressed with clarity and confidence!

Module 7: Writing: Narrative & Descriptive
This module teaches students the two essential skills of storytelling (narrative writing) and painting a picture with words (descriptive writing). In the narrative section, students learn to structure a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. They focus on creating simple characters, establishing a setting, and developing a basic plot. In the descriptive section, the focus is on making their stories more vivid and engaging. Students practice using the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) and powerful adjectives to "show" the reader what is happening, rather than just "telling" them. By the end of the module, students will be able to combine these skills to write stories that are both well-organized and rich with interesting details.

Module 8: Writing: Informative & Opinion
This module will teach you how to become a master communicator. You will learn to gather facts and share information clearly and concisely, which will assist you in teaching others. You will also learn how to express your thoughts and beliefs effectively, backing up your opinions with strong reasons and evidence. By the end of this module, you'll be able to write reports, summaries, and persuasive essays that captivate your readers!

Module 9: Listening & Speaking
Hello, future communicators! In Grade 2, Module 6, "Speaking, Listening & Oral Presentation," we're going to sharpen our skills in sharing ideas and really understanding what others are saying. Communication isn't just about talking; it's about listening too! Here’s what we’ll be focusing on: Retell a Short Story: Have you ever heard a really great story and wanted to tell it to someone else? In this module, you'll learn how to retell a short story clearly and in your own words. This means remembering the main characters, the setting (where the story happens), what problem the characters face, and how it all ends! It’s like being a storyteller yourself, making sure your audience understands all the important parts. Oral Reports: Get ready to share what you've learned! Oral reports are when you stand up and present information about a topic to your classmates or teacher. You'll practice speaking clearly, looking at your audience, and sharing facts in an organized way. It's a fantastic way to become an expert on a topic and teach others what you know! Listening for Gist: Sometimes when people talk, they share a lot of information. Listening for gist means being able to pick out the most important ideas or the main point of what someone is saying, without getting lost in all the small details. It's like finding the main treasure in a big pile of gems! This skill helps you understand presentations, conversations, and even instructions better. By practicing retelling stories, giving oral reports, and listening for the main idea, you'll become a confident speaker and a super listener, ready to communicate your thoughts and understand the world around you!

Module 10: Writing Workshop
This module introduces Grade 2 students to the fundamentals of the writing process, empowering them to see themselves as authors. The lesson breaks down writing into four simple, memorable steps: Think & Brainstorm, Plan, Write, and Check. Students learn how to generate ideas, organize their thoughts using simple story structures (beginning, middle, end), write a first draft, and perform basic edits using the "C.O.P.S." method (Capitals, Organization, Punctuation, Spelling). Through guided and independent practice activities, learners build the confidence to transform their ideas into short, clear, and organized written pieces.

Review & Mastery Checks
This module is divided into two main parts: Comprehensive Review: Students will revisit the most important skills from the entire course. This includes a review of: Narrative Reading: Identifying characters, setting, and plot. Informational Reading: Using text features to find key facts. Writing: Applying the writing process and using descriptive language. Vocabulary & Morphology: Breaking down words to understand their meaning. Mastery Checks: Through a series of integrated activities and short quizzes, students will have the opportunity to apply these skills together.
